Community Service
Here are three Silver Cord opportunities for you to consider.
· Volunteers are needed for Children & Families of Iowa’s 2019 Kidsfest, presented by Veridian Credit Union (January 18-19, 2019) in the Varied Industries Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Volunteers are needed with children’s games and activities, hand out goodie bags, face paint, help exhibitors and assist with other activities during this three day long event. (Click here) is a link with detailed information about all of the volunteer options. Questions? Contact Jill Haupts (email click here).
· You can make a difference in the lives of dedicated adult English language students by helping with child care during class. Volunteers are needed in the Learning Resource Center every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 5-7:45 p.m. Two volunteers are needed each evening to assist the child care provider. You will be responsible for helping play games, reading books, and other various tasks while parents learn. Come have fun! You must be at least age 16, love children, and be patient with and have respect for individuals with diverse backgrounds. To volunteer (click here). For more information, contact Karen Crosby (email click here). The Learning Resource Center is located at 3550 Mills Civic Pkwy.
· WDMCS schools will be collecting personal care items to be given to Clive Community Services, West Des Moines Human Services, and families in need (week of February 11-15). Volunteers will be paired with a school and will decorate and drop off a donation box, distribute PR materials to the school, count and collect donations, and pack the donations (Thursday, February 14). All supplies will be provided and volunteers will earn 5 hours of Silver Cord credit for this service opportunity. To sign-up (click here). Questions? · Please note that Semester Tests begin next week. Monday (Jan. 7; orange day) is a normal day, but Tuesday (Jan. 8; black day) will run on a “Monday” eight-period schedule, not the usual extended period schedule (OB). Transfer busses will follow the same schedule. First day of testing is Wednesday (Jan. 9).

School resumes on Tuesday (Jan. 15, first day of second semester) at standard school times, but it will be an eight-period “Monday” schedule (orange day), not the usual extended period schedule (OO). Therefore, Wednesday (Jan. 16) is also an eight period day (black day; ending at 2:35). On both days, transfer busses will follow the alternate schedule.
· Please note that Monday (Jan 21) is Martin Luther King Day and a staff workday, so there is no school for students. School resumes on Tuesday (Jan. 22) at standard school times and it will be a regular Odd Orange Day.
